Every week, you should clean your hands and then pinch the carbon to loosen it (this prevents clumping and clogs). The filters are filled with activated carbon and are sewn never glued.

Preparing and Changing Mini Classic Water Distiller Water Filter
To prepare filters for use, soak them in distilled water for a short time, rinse them out by swishing the filter around a bit, then soak them again in fresh distilled water until the bulk of the loose particles have been rinsed away.
